Old Dogs

Two of the canine founding members of this club were lost in November to old age:

ASCA CH Woodstock's Maggie Mae SchH 1 CD(X) and

Ryker vom Polarstern SchH 3 FH CD TD

They were the last of our original members who included Ernie (Bushwackin' Ernie of Chutzpah SchH 3), Lasar (Lasar von Siegestor UDT), Queenie (Queen von Muritz SchH 1), and Taiga (Hellgate Canyon's Taiga SchH 2), who have all gone beyond.

Those were the days! In September of 1989, five of us travelled down to Spokane to trial, four of us absolute first-timers. Warren was so nervous he had nausea and tunnel vision. Maggie and Ryker both got their SchH 1's that weekend despite their handlers!

Since then, our club members have been training and traveling and making friends all over the US. Dogs have come and gone, training methods have changed, some have come full circle. But, it all started with these, our first dogs. They will always be best remembered.

Woodstock's Maggie Mae SchH 1 CD(X) TD

26 November 1985 - 27 November 2000

I've been blessed by having three "once-in-a-lifetime" dogs, and Maggie was one of them. She was severely injured in a dog fight, losing a front leg, before we could finish her CDX and SchH2, but that didn't diminish her spirit. Maggie was the light of my life. I miss her so much. (-sam)

Ryker vom Polarstern SchH3 FH CD TD

22 October 1986 - 29 November 2000

The one word I keep going back to to describe Ryker is "sovereignty". Of course, he could be silly too, gamboling around the yard with a stick in his mouth. He enjoyed nothing more than a good fight on the protection field (especially with Franz Dörr), except maybe enjoying a bowl of ice cream afterwards. He was a wonderful natural tracker and a great protection dog. Only his obedience left a little to be desired!

Ryker was the kind of dog who could be extremely confident and serious on the protection field, then roll over and let a toddler use his belly for a pillow. He had impecable temperament. He'll be sorely missed as well.

No matter how prepared you are, it's still hard. This is the worst part about having dogs in your life.

But, life goes on. Gator's nudging my elbow, Rosie's asleep by my feet. Young dogs need attention, there's training to do, new fields to track, new lessons to learn. (-sam)

Beyond this shore

and the farther shore.

Beyond the beyond,

where there is no beginning

and no end.

Without fear, go.
