Trial Information 2010!

We are pleased to have with us one of the most respected and experienced judges in USA, Dr. Michael Caputo.  Mike has been active in the sport and in the German Shepherd for more than 3 decades, and is highly sought after for his fair judging, detailed critiques, and ease with handlers of all experience levels.

Because we only have Mike for a short visit, the trial schedule will be a little tight, and even in Montana, it can get pretty warm in the middle of the day in August (whose idea was this date, anyway???).  The proposed schedule will be pretty close to the following:

Friday, August 13, 2010
5:00 pm Meet at trial field for temperament tests, introductions
5:30 pm  BH trial field obedience portion.
7:30 pm,  BH traffic portion
8:30 pm,  dinner and refreshments

Saturday, August 14, 2010
6:30 am Meet at tracking fields, MSU Agronomy Farm for SchH/TR dogs
8:00 am Breakfast at the Corner Cafe
9:00 am, as needed, meet for FH tracking (location to be announced)
10:30 am  SchH/OB obedience at the trial field.  Overflow BHs may do obedience at this time.
Protection to follow obedience, weather permitting.  If over 85°F, we may take a break until evening.
Following protection or about 6 pm, whichever comes later, happy hour, awards presentations, BBQ hosted by BSSC.  No charge to entries, $5 per person for spectators, adult beverages $1-$2 or BYOB.

Big Sky Schutzhund Club has a history of providing great hospitality and a warm welcome to all entries and participants, and we are happy we can include Mike’s Southern graces as an accompaniment this year.  BSSC welcomes any and all spectators to all phases of the trial, but please:

  • No non-entered dogs on the trial field until after all judging is complete.
  • Please be respectful, clean up after your dog whenever and wherever you can, but particularly at the tracking fields, and
  • Dogs at the Agronomy Farm MUST be kept out of planted areas.

Michael Seminar in May

Big Sky Schutzhund Club is pleased to announce our annual seminar with Michael Ellis. Michael started up his school in the SF Bay area this year, and so has cut all but a few of his seminars out of his schedule, and we’re lucky enough to have him keep us on his schedule. Michael is an ace communicator to both handlers and dogs, and is guaranteed to help you become more in sync with your dog. Training will cover B and C phases of Schutzhund as well as all aspects of Ringsport. Big Sky members are experienced hosts, and a great time is guaranteed for all.

To give folks the chance to tune up for the AWDF, our seminar this year is the weekend before Memorial Day, on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of May.  Prices are $125 per day with a dog, and $325 for the 3-day weekend.  Discount for a second dog same handler is negotiable, but space is limited. Spectators are welcome for $60 per day (no limit). Weather is springtime in the Rockies, so we could have snow in the morning, bright sun in the afternoon, and hail in the evening, so plan to dress accordingly. Shelter is available as are most facilities. Please contact Warren Jones at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Welcome to new contributor Dr Linda Kennedy

Boris earned his CD in Atlanta with HIT all three days I'm excited to announce that we have a new author writing for Big Sky Schutzhund Club. Dr. Linda Kennedy MS SLP ND is "naturally treating people doctor" from Atlanta, and will be writing on health-related issues. She writes: "I ran across your website and thoroughly enjoyed it. You have a lot of fantastic information posted." It's always nice to know that someone out there is reading it!

Dr Linda has European Dobermans that compete in Schutzhund as well as other sports. Here is Boris at 14 months. He recently earned his CD at shows in Atlanta with HIT all three days. For more information on our new author and her dogs, you can visit her website at DarkAngel Euro Dobermans.

The first two articles came up after a discussion of titres and vaccination and can be found through the ARTICLES link at left.

Dear Friends & Members,

I am pleased to be able to offer an update to your summer calendars – the confirmation of our summer seminar and trial dates.  Michael Ellis will again be joining us, but this time it will be a week earlier – May 22-24, 2010, the weekend before Memorial Day.  The reasons for the change range from using it as a draw to get folks here for a “tuneup” on the way to the AWDF Nationals in Indianapolis, to the conflict that Anne and I both have with having to be at the AWDF’s (in Anne’s case, for the AWDF General meeting, in my case for the judges’ college).  Now that Michael’s school has taken off, he has dropped back to 1 seminar a month, and we are fortunate to remain on his calendar of “preferred” locations.   And I don’t even think he’s raised his fees….

Second, we have successfully scheduled our trial for the weekend of August 14 and 15, with USA judge Mike Caputo.  Mike is a true southern gentleman with a good eye and a real love for the sport, who gives fair ratings and great critiques, and will be a pleasure on and off the field.  Mike recently moved to St Joseph, MO from the hinterlands of the Appalachians, so he’s become more accessible to us than in the past.

Hope winter is treating you all as well as can be expected, and a personal THANKS to everyone who participated in our training session at the barn today – great fun was had by all…

Cheers!
WJ
